How to Build a Solar Pool Heater For an Inground Pool

!: How to Build a Solar Pool Heater For an Inground Pool

Are you trying to extend your swimming season or prepare for a better one next year? If so, there are many options when it comes to pool heaters and one of the most economical is a solar pool heater that you can build yourself. Here is a quick plan to help you get started with your new heater.

The most expensive part of this heater is going to be the pump and it will probably have to be replaced every other year. This needs to be strong enough to get the water out of your pool and through many feet of tubing. You can get some advice from your local hardware contractor manager since you will be getting your tubing there as well.

You will need to purchase about 50 feet of black tubing that is between 1/4 of an inch in diameter and 3/4 of an inch and diameter. Anything in between here should work just fine. You will also need some PVC pipe that fits in both ends of this tubing. Probably about 10 to 15 feet will be enough. You should also get a shut off valve that will attach to the pvc pipe.

Now you need to run the pvc from the pool to the pump, then out of the pump and into the black tubing. At the other end of the black tubing you want to run the PVC with the shut off valve back into the pool.

You will be taking the black tubing and running it back and forth between two 2 by 4 pieces of wood that you drill out holes in for the tubing. This should make a 3 to 5 foot set of tubing going up and down the 2 by 4s. This is your heater and you need to mount this part on a roof top or somewhere that it will get a lot of sunlight.

This type of solar pool heater will do a great job at getting you from the 70s up into the mid 80s for most of the year and should help you extend your swimming season by a few weeks or months depending on your climate.

Solar Powered Water Features Versus Electric

!: Solar Powered Water Features Versus Electric

Solar power, electric power, which one to choose with so many pump options available for your water feature it's no wonder people get confused.

Traditional water feature pumps usually involve the use of an electric pump, wiring and a source to plug the unit into. Whereas a solar water pump only uses the natural light of the sun for its power. Solar powered water features are becoming increasingly popular due to the global movement of going green and being kind to our earth. Using solar power as opposed to electric reduces the use of man-made energy. A solar water pump is therefore more earth and wallet friendly.

When using a solar water pump it must be said that living in an area where sun is plentiful is always advised. While a solar pump can be used in areas where there is not as much sunlight it will then rely on backup systems like batteries. Some solar water pumps come equipped with the battery backup option but not all so pay attention when purchasing your pump.

Electric may seem like the logical choice but if you are looking to save some money than it is not the way to go. Because electric pumps draw their energy from a utility source there will be a monthly cost involved in running an electric pump. When using a solar pump the only need is sunshine or batteries during a sunless period. Running your water feature during the night-time hours is not a problem using the solar power pump because it will run using energy stored in the solar panels and can then be switched to the battery backup mode.

Electric pumps need to be kept on a timer otherwise they would run constantly unless manually shut off. The solar power pump will shut down during the evening when no sunlight is available and will restart when the sun rises making them far more efficient than electric pumps.

When adding a water feature to your garden area think about whether or not you will use a solar power pump or electric. The solar pump needs access to sunlight which also allows for more exciting water features with fish or live plants. By far solar pumps are far better as they perform their function as good as if not better than their electric counterparts and the environment as well as your wallet are better off for it.
